Prosper Placer serves families who live at or below the poverty line and are motivated to make lasting changes in their lives. The needs of this population are related to how social services are provided: when a family is in truly dire need, they receive services through various agencies and organizations. But as families begin to rebuild their lives, the support services start to disappear. Without some form of community support, many of these families begin to slip back into poverty, find themselves again dependent on government assistance, and the cycle repeats itself.
Through their participation in our program, families are matched with 2 to 3 volunteer “Allies” who commit to helping them along the path for at least 24 months. In the process, families gain the knowledge, skills, and support they need to transform their lives, and create an intentional community of support.
Prosper Placer is modeled after projects across the country that utilize the non-religious-based NETWorX USA model. Prosper Placer is a unique collaboration between local churches (Pioneer United Methodist, St. Teresa Avila Catholic, St. Luke’s Episcopal, Newcastle United Methodist, and First United Methodist of Loomis) and Child Advocates of Placer County. The churches provide volunteer “Allies”, a location for the weekly meetings that includes a communal meal, and child care for the families. Child Advocates provides a 501 C 3 umbrella, oversees paid staff who implement the NETWorX model, and brings extensive experience in managing volunteers.
SS. Peter & Paul is part of a multi-church cohort sponsoring this work in the Roseville and Rocklin area. We have provided allies, childcare, cooking teams, and used our Social Hall for the weekly gatherings on Tuesday nights.
