I want my child to receive First Communion, what is involved?
First Reconciliation and First Communion is a two-year process that typically begins in first grade. We offer an approach that is centered on the family and their journey with the child in sacramental preparation.
Enrollment and active participation in Youth & Family Faith is required. In addition to continued involvement in Youth & Family Faith, the second year of preparation will include parent/child sessions, at home parent/child lessons, retreats, and service activities.
What is First Reconciliation? Why does it precede First Communion?
Reconciliation is the sacrament of God's unconditional love and mercy in which a person confesses their sins to Jesus, though a priest, and receives absolution (forgiveness) for their sins. The Sacrament of Reconciliation helps prepare us to unite with Jesus, body and soul, in the Eucharist. Children are to be prepared for and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to receiving First Communion. First Reconciliation typically takes place in early February and First Holy Communion in the late April (during their second year of preparation).
How do I enroll my child in First Communion Preparation?
Enrollment and active participation in Youth & Family Faith is required for both years of preparation. If your child is in their second year of preparation, please indicate that on the family registration form.
What if my child is in second grade but did not complete first grade at SS. Peter & Paul?
Enroll your child for Youth & Family Faith and Sacrament Preparation as long as they completed a first year of preparation at another parish. You will need to provide a letter of completion from your previous parish.
What my child is in second grade (or older) but didn’t complete a first-grade year at all?
Please speak with a staff member during the registration process to determine the appropriate preparation needed for your child.
Thank you for this opportunity to journey with your family during this very special time.
